Volkswagen is considering changing its name to avoid confusion between the group – a holding company owning several car makers – and its best-known brand, a German paper reported on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
Volkswagen – which apart from its namesake brand also owns Audi, Czech carmaker Skoda, Spain’s Seat, British luxury brand Bentley and others – has among other names considered renaming itself Auto Union, Germany’s Bild newspaper reported.
Reuters said Bild reported that chief executive Bernd Pischetsrieder had opposed the change to Auto Union, which would revive the name used in the 1930s of a predecessor to its Audi unit, without citing sources.
