Toyota Motor launched the new generation Sienta compact MPV in Japan this week, featuring a more comfortable interior layout and the automaker’s latest safety and security systems.

The vehicle, based on the Yaris platform, was originally launched in 2003 and now comes with a choice of 1.5L gasoline engine and a hybrid petrol-electric powertrain. It has three rows of seats and features a sliding door which is typically found in larger MPVs. As well as in Japan, the vehicle is sold in markets across South-east Asia and Taiwan.

The new model retains the same exterior dimensions, 4,400mm length and 330mm low floor, which the company considers optimal for practical urban use. All models come with Toyota Safety Sense as standard, the company’s latest active safety package which includes the Pre-Collision Safety System and the Proactive Driving Assist.

Prices in Japan start at JPY1.95m (US$14,300) for the entry-level X model, rising to JPY3.108m (US$22,800) for the top-end Z hybrid model. The company has set a domestic sales target of 8,300 units per month.
