Honda’s East Liberty Auto Plant (ELP) in Ohio has begun assembling the redesigned 2023 CR-V hybrid small SUV, following up on its launch of the petrol variant in October 2022.
ELP has joined Honda plants in Canada and Indiana in manufacturing the new hybrid model and each worked in close collaboration with Anna Engine Plant (AEP) in Ohio and the Ohio Transmission Plant (TMP-OH) which make the new powertrain.
The 2023 CR-V hybrid, first built in North America at Honda of Canada Mfg (HCM) last October, has a new two electric motor hybrid system and a newly refined Atkinson-cycle engine unique to hybrid variants.
About half of CR-Vs sold each year in the US will be powered by the two motor hybrid system.
The two litre, Atkinson cycle, I4 engine built at AEP is the first Honda engine to combine high pressure direct injection with multistage injection “for an extremely homogeneous mixture that delivers clean combustion”, the automaker said.
The twomotor hybrid-electric system made at TMP-OH features a new arrangement, switching from coaxial motors of the same size stacked on top of each other to a two-motor parallel axis system with engines of different sizes mounted side-by-side
