Mitsubishi Fuso Truck & Bus Corp reportedly said on Wednesday it would halt sales of most big trucks for about two months while it traces some 120,000 vehicles that it wants to recall to fix defective front and rear wheel hubs.

Reuters said the truck maker has already issued recalls for over 910,000 trucks and buses since admitting in May that it hid information on vehicle defects from authorities for eight years.

Fuso reportedly said it took the latest action after conducting stricter durability tests on front and rear hubs on all of its large trucks and buses as part of a new safety initiative. No accident had resulted from the defects but it had stopped taking new orders for about three-quarters of all of its big trucks since last Tuesday.

“We hope to restart sales in mid-January, though that depends entirely on the application process (for the recalls) with the government,” Hideyuki Shiozawa, senior executive officer in charge of quality and technical affairs, told Reuters.

The truck maker reportedly said it generally ships about 600 units a month of the line of trucks subject to the recall. It aims to file an official recall application with the transport ministry in mid-December and said it does not know how much it will need to spend on the repairs, for which it will bear the costs.

Subject to the recall are 116,500 registered trucks and buses with newly found problems with rear hubs, and 19,500 trucks and buses with front-hub glitches, with some overlap between the two, Reuters said, noting that the latest move means Fuso will have recalled about 60% of all large trucks and buses on the road now that it has built since 1983.
