The entire UK car repair industry has been given a final warning by the National Consumer Council over “shoddy service and rip-off charges”, according to the Daily Telegraph.
The paper said the watchdog accused trade bodies of inaction in dealing with customers’ problems and is threatening to lodge a “super complaint” to the government – a measure that could trigger an Office of Fair Trade investigation.
According to the report, the NCC and its sister councils in Wales and Scotland said the industry was failing to regulate itself effectively despite 11 attempts to raise standards over the past 30 years.
Dame Deirdre Hutton, the chairman of the council, reportedly said: “We are throwing down the gauntlet to the industry.”
Widespread failures included missed faults, work done unnecessarily and charges for work that had not been done, consumer groups found, the Daily Telegraph said.
