Malaysia’s second national car company Perodua, introduced its latest eMO-II (pronounced M-O-2) battery electric vehicle (BEV) prototype at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS 2024) this week, ahead of commercial production next year. The company stated that this latest prototype of the locally-developed eMO-II small electric car “has more refined styling incorporating 21st century aesthetics with Malaysian uniqueness”.
Perodua’s president and CEO, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, said in a statement: “This prototype is the continuation of our EV journey as we continue to build this technology from the ground up. This eMO-II prototype has been improved from its predecessor in terms of styling and features and it is now more defined”, adding “keep in mind that this is still a prototype model and there are plenty of other features and improvements that we will add to the finished product, which we will introduce in the near future,”
Dato’ Sri Zainal told reporters at the show that he expects the new BEV to be priced at between MYR50,000 and MYR90,000 (US$12,000-US2,000), which would make it the cheapest BEV in the Malaysia market when it hits the market. The company aims to produce around 500 units of the model per month from next year.
The eMO-II has been under development since 2023 at Perodua’s R&D centre in Rawang, in the Malaysian state of Selangor, with Dato’ Sri Zainal pointing out: “It has been a steep learning curve for our team as we have engaged numerous consultants to understand the inner workings of an EV, but I am happy to say that our team has managed to keep our timeline and be able to continue our story here today.”
The country’s first national car company, Proton, is scheduled to launch its first BEV model, the Geely-based e.MAS 7, by the end of 2024.
