Delphi Corp. is to significantly increase the number of OEM satellite digital audio modules that it supplies to the Chrysler Group, company officials said.

Chrysler will now fit Delphi’s OEM satellite digital audio receivers in 11 vehicle models during the 2005 model year. Financial details of the contract were withheld.

The volume boost is the result of a development agreement announced recently by Sirius and Chrysler. Under that agreement the two companies plan to make the satellite radio service available to more customers through factory installation programmes.

The Chrysler group first selected Delphi as its Sirius radio supplier two years ago in a multi-year manufacturing agreement – the majority of these units were dealer-installed.

Now Chrysler is offering factory-fit satellite radio in most of its Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep model lines.

“Consumer interest in the satellite radio option for [Chrysler’s] new vehicles has been great,” said Beth Schwarting, general director of sales and marketing at Delphi’s electronics & safety division.

Delphi claims to have been the first manufacturer to integrate a factory-installed in-dash radio in the instrument panel of a vehicle in 1936. The company has since produced over 255 million audio units.
