Tata Motors is gradually shifting Nano production to the Sanand plant in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, from Pant Nagar. The latter will then solely manufacture commercial vehicles like the Ace, Magic, Winger, Aria and, from next year, the new Venture van.

“We are planning to launch Venture sometime next year,” said Tata’s CV sales chief Sandeep Kumar.

Pant Nagar would likely run at full capacity from next year with Sanand producing the Nano and Tata has started a feasibility study for one more plant.

A top Tata source confirmed: “Feasibility study for a new plant is a continuous exercise. We do look at a lot of opportunities for a third plant.” Pant Nagar has the capacity to manufacture 250,000 units annually and last year built around 160,000 units.

“With the economy opening up, new opportunities are opening up in the automobile sector as well. Tourism is growing in India and SUVs may replace commercial vehicles like Winger for tours and travel, contract carriage and ambulance segments,” said Kumar.

The market is almost evenly distributed among the AC and non AC sub segments.

“The AC segment accounted for 45,000 units last year and we are after a 20% share of that market and hope to sell 7,500 units of the 6-8 seater Winger Platinum,” said Kumar.

Tata introduced the Winger in 2007 and has since sold almost 18,000 units.
