Nissan Motor plans to produce 100,000 electric cars a year in the US, a news report said today, as it looks to launch EVs in its largest export market next year.
News agency AFP said Nissan would produce the car – and its batteries – in its Tennessee plant. The launch next year would be followed by a worldwide roll out in 2012.
Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said he was not at all worried about selling the cars in the US as there was an appetite there for zero-emmision vehicles.
“The US is going to be a very important market,” he added.
Nissan and alliance partner Renault have agreed to market three models each initially for mass production, and to expand the range in the future.
