Great Wall Motor has met with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam) as well as government officials with a view to setting up a vehicle factory in the country.

This would make it the first major Chinese company to establish independent operations in India. Great Wall has also been in talks with a number of local suppliers.

The automaker currently operates in China without a foreign partner and sells its SUVs and pickup trucks in other emerging markets including Russia and South Africa.

Chinese automakers have yet to make any major investments in India although SAIC has a limited link with the country through its stake in General Motors India.

Commercial vehicle manufacturer Beiqi Foton has a memorandum of understanding with the Maharashtra government to build a plant within the next five years.

Great Wall produces around 800,000 cars and SUVs a year and exports to around 100 countries.
