There may be a global economic downturn but no one has told Daimler’s Mercedes Benz which has reported all time record sales worldwide for September.

Last month the brand sold more vehicles than in any other month in its history with a total of 142,994 new cars sold worldwide, equivalent to growth of 15.9%.

Since the beginning of 2013, Mercedes has sold 1,062,638 units, up 10%, and saw growth of 18% in the third quarter alone.

The US and China were particularly strong in the third quarter although Mercedes also expanded its market shares in Europe where it remains the top premium brand in Germany, and also grew in Japan.

The company said the strong sales had been fuelled by the success of its compact models and the launch of the updated E-class while the redesigned S-Class is already selling strongly in Germany and is currently being launched in China.

Sales and marketing head Joachim Schmidt said: “Looking at the previous nine months, we can safely say that Mercedes-Benz will post another sales record for 2013.”
