Mazda’s AutoAlliance (AAT) plant in Thailand on Friday began production of the redesigned 3 for the local market where it is due to go on sale from next week.

Thailand is the third plant to build the new model; it is already in production at the company’s new factory in Mexico (for NAFTA markets) and in Japan.

AutoAlliance built the previous 3 for three years from January 2011, assembling just over 12,600 units.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the start of production of the latest model, Mazda president Masamichi Kogai said: “AAT is one of Mazda’s most important production facilities in terms of the future growth of our business.

Thailand is the centre of our business in the ASEAN region and the start of production of the [new 3] indicates that our business has begun a new stage in this country.”
