SAIC Motor Corporation has signed an agreement with Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor startup company Horizon Robotics to develop new connected services for smart cars.
The two companies said they plan to leverage their respective strengths to develop new onboard technologies and connect services for a new generation of smart cars.
SAIC Motor vice-president Yang Xiaodong said in a statement: “With this cooperation we are looking to fully integrate our respective strengths to build a brand-new collaborative model in automotive AI development and for ‘intelligentisation’ of the automobile industry”.
Yang said SAIC Motor’s passenger vehicle division would be used as a platform to create a collaborative ecosystem with the top companies in related sectors.
He added: “Horizon Robotics is one of the few companies that has the capability for manufacturing smart chips, vision perception algorithms as well as data technology.”
According to the agreement, Horizon will provide a full range of smart chips based on SAIC’s diversified passenger vehicle demands in intelligent driving development.

Horizon said recently it had secured US$350m in Series C3 financing from a group of investors including BYD, Changjiang Automobile Electronic and Dongfeng Asset Management.
