Hyundai is keen to make the point that its ‘all-new’ Tucson SUV, is just that – it is not a replacement for the ix35, it is a different model, more closely aligned to the larger Sante Fe and a new ‘brand ambassador’ for the carmaker in Europe.

Different in looks inside and out, the new Tucson is larger than the ix35 and its naming brings it into the Sante Fe family. Does that mean, other larger or smaller family members will appear?

There are no plans, yet according to Hyundai executives at the media launch in Frankfurt. Hyundai Motor Europe marketing chief Jochen Sengpiehl believes the SUV is a significant new car for the company, helping to shift perceptions of the brand in Europe.

He added: “Hyundai Motor has high aspirations for its brand in Europe. The new Tucson is a bold new car and our brand ambassador that brings to life our claim ‘New Thinking, New Possibilities’. Through great design and advanced technologies, it represents another leap forward for [us] in Europe, and we expect it to attract new customer groups to the brand.”

Since the first Santa Fe went on sale in Europe in 2000, Hyundai has delivered around 1.2m SUVs in this region, affirming the company’s credentials in the growing SUV market. In 2014 over 25% of its sales in Europe were SUVs.

Chief operating officer Thomas Schmid, said: “Hyundai Motor is a pioneer of the European SUV segment, having sold well over a million units during the past 15 years. With new Tucson, we have again used our expertise to create a car that will sustain our business momentum in Europe.”
