Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD Auto has secured its largest ever single order, for 134 electric buses with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation in the USA.
BYD, with its US headquarters also located in Los Angeles, won the lion's share of an order for 155 buses placed by the city, which is also said to be the largest single order of electric buses in US history.
The company has already delivered the first four buses to the city, with the rest of the fleet expected to be delivered over the next several years starting in March 2020.
The city's department of transport has also just completed the construction of a new three-acre maintenance yard complete with the EV charging infrastructure for up to 70 buses at a time and also featuring solar panel canopies to reduce energy costs.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said "the clean transportation revolution is not a distant dream — it's happening on LA's streets right now".
Los Angeles aims to make its bus fleet entirely emissions-free in time for the opening ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
