The global automotive industry experienced a 34% decline in the number of internet of things-related patent applications in Q3 2022 compared with the previous quarter. The total number of internet of things-related grants dropped by 11% in Q3 2022, according to GlobalData’s whitepaper on Internet of Things in Automotive – Patenting Activity in Q3 2022.
Notably, the number of internet of things-related patent applications in the automotive industry was 1,267 in Q3 2022, versus 1,908 in the prior quarter.
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Qualcomm filed the most internet of things patents within the automotive industry in Q3 2022. The company filed 86 internet of things-related patents in the quarter, compared with 65 in the previous quarter. It was followed by LG with 61 internet of things patent filings, Huawei Investment & Holding (54 filings), and Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (20 filings) in Q3 2022.
The largest share of internet of things related patent filings in the automotive industry in Q3 2022 was in the US with 33%, followed by China (15%) and South Korea (6%). The share represented by the US was 5% higher than the 28% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
