Ford's new three litre diesel V6 engine for the top selling North American F-150 pickup truck line comes from England, though that is not mentioned in official statements from the automaker.

The engine, branded Power Stroke to link it to the 6.7-litre V8 diesel offered in the commercial grade F-series models, was announced back in January with claimed best-in-class towing ability and torque plus a "targeted" EPA-estimated rating of 30mpg on the highway.

Ford said it could tow 11,400 pounds had 2,020 pounds of payload capacity while the 250 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque would top the class in this hard-fought US segment.

The diesel also added a sixth engine choice for F-150 buyers.

"The very same Ford powertrain team behind the 6.7-litre Power Stroke for Super Duty trucks since 2011 designed and engineered this all-new three-litre V6 diesel engine to the specific needs of North American F-150 customers who tow and haul frequently," the statement said.

"This new V6 diesel features the same compacted-graphite iron block material construction and forged-steel crank used in the [petrol] 2.7-litre EcoBoost engine for added strength and durability along with reduced weight."

The engine has a high-efficiency variable-geometry turbocharger, high pressure, common rail fuel injection system, dual fuel filters, cast-aluminium oil pan and two-stage oil pump.

Turns out it's also English. According to WardsAuto.com, following a preview test-and-tow, the engine is a variant of the three-litre turbodiesel sold in Jaguar and Land Rover models and is built at Ford's Dagenham Engine plant here in the UK.

Ford powertrain calibration manager Pete Lyon told WardsAuto significant changes, some related to using existing F-150 petrol engine plumbing, include relocating the turbocharger and intake and exhaust manifolds.

Engineers also revised the compacted graphite iron block, the Bosch supplied, common rail, fuel injection system, the Honeywell turbo, the cooled exhaust gas recirculation and the SCR system.

Earlier this month, Ford confirmed the new engine now officially boasts EPA-estimated ratings of 30 mpg highway, 22 mpg city and 25 mpg combined, adding these are the highest EPA-estimated ratings available in a full size pickup truck.

"These benchmark figures are the result of more than a decade of work developing a lightweight high-strength, military-grade, aluminium-alloy body, a 10-speed SelectShift transmission, and robust engine construction of aluminium and compacted graphite iron to deliver durability, reduced weight and stump-pulling torque," a statement said.

"Even a few years ago, customers wouldn't have imagined an EPA-estimated rating of 30mpg highway would be possible in a full size pickup but our team of crazy-smart engineers rose to the challenge," said Hau Thai-Tang, who heads product development and purchasing.

Trucks with the English engine reach US dealers in May.
