The millionth vehicle to be shipped to an export market has just been announced by Toyota Australia. The division sends its Melbourne-built models to New Zealand as well as various markets in the South Pacific and the Middle East.
The Altona works in surburban Melbourne manufactures three versions of the one basic model: the Camry, its hybrid derivative, and the Toyota Aurion. The last of these is unique to Altona – the Aussie market Camry cannot be ordered with a V6 engine, this powertrain being reserved for the Aurion, a Camry with slightly altered styling.
Chris Harrod, Toyota Australia’s executive director of manufacturing, said reaching one million exports was an important milestone for the company.
“We are extremely proud of our ability to build cars that not only suit the needs of our local customers but also those in the Middle East and our other export markets.”
“Enormous effort has gone into ensuring our cars can withstand extreme temperatures and tough terrain,” Harrod added.
“The Australian-built Camry and Aurion are trusted brands [sic] in our export markets and we are known for producing high quality and reliable vehicles.”

By GlobalDataToyota Australia, which started exporting vehicles to New Zealand in 1986, now ships cars to Brahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Yemen in addition to New Zealand and certain South Pacific island nations. For the year to the end of July, the export total was 42,142 units.
