Renesas Electronics has unveiled the R-Car X5H, its first automotive multi-domain system-on-chips (SoC) built on advanced 3-nanometer (nm) process technology.

The new SoC integrates multiple automotive domains such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), and gateway applications into a single chip, offering a higher level of integration and performance than previous solutions.

The R-Car X5H SoC, the first in the R-Car X5 series, is designed to address the increasing complexity of modern automotive systems, where there is a growing need for computational power, energy efficiency, and safety.

It enables Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 suppliers to streamline development processes and adopt sustainable system solutions through the transition to centralised electronic control units (ECUs).

Renesas’ R-Car X5H features advance hardware-based isolation, that delivers secure and “highly integrated” processing capabilities.

This feature allows for the enhancement of AI and graphics processing performance using chiplet technology, addressing the growing complexity of Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) development.

As part of the fifth-generation R-Car Family, the R-Car X5H SoC confronts challenges such as computational performance, power consumption, cost, and the integration of hardware and software, all while ensuring vehicle safety.

The SoC integrates application processing, real-time processing, GPU and AI computation, extensive display functionalities, and sensor connectivity.

The SoC supports AI acceleration of up to 400 TOPS, with “industry-leading” TOPS/W performance, and GPU processing capabilities of up to 4 TFLOPS.

It features 32 Arm Cortex-A720AE CPU cores and six Arm Cortex-R52 dual lockstep CPU cores, which support ASIL D capabilities without the need for external microcontrollers (MCUs).

Produced with one of TSMC’s most advanced process nodes, the SoC achieves a significant reduction in power consumption and boosts CPU performance, thereby reducing total system costs and enhancing vehicle operating range.

Renesas high performance computing senior vice president and general manager Vivek Bhan said: “Our latest innovations in the R-Car Gen 5 platform tackle the complex challenges the automotive industry faces today,

“Our customers are looking for end-to-end automotive-grade system solutions that cover everything from hardware optimisation, safety compliance to flexible and scalable architecture selection and seamless tools and software integration.

“Our R-Car Gen 5 Family meets these demands, and we are committed to helping the industry accelerate SDV development and Shift-Left innovations for the next era of automotive technology.”
