German automotive components manufacturer Bosch Mobility Solutions last week announced it had signed an agreement to establish a joint venture with China’s Jiangling Motors Corporation Group (JMCG) focused on the development and production of eAxle systems for new energy light-duty commercial vehicles. The eAxle system comprises primarily a drive axle, electric motor and electronic control unit (ECU).

Bosch confirmed that the planned joint venture, which is subject to regulatory approval, will have a registered capital of CNY500m (US$70m) and will be 60%-owned by Bosch and 40% by JMCG. The new company will be responsible “for the development, application, assembly, sales and service of eAxle systems for light-duty commercial vehicles”.

Bosch said the deal reflects a “shared commitment to further develop the new energy commercial vehicle industry, with the two partners intent on leveraging their advanced technologies and unique strengths in the local market.”

Bosch will contribute its core eAxle competence to the joint venture, drawing on its expertise in eDrive technology, while JMCG will offer its in-depth knowledge of the vehicle sector and detailed understanding of the local market. The joint venture will be based in the Nanchang Xiaolan Economic and Technological Development Zone in China’s Jiangxi province

Bosch said it expects one in three trucks in China will be fitted with a battery pack by 2035. The company describes itself as a global leader in automotive electrification technology, providing comprehensive solutions including eAxles, motors, power electronics and vehicle energy management, adding “the new collaboration with JMCG on light-duty commercial vehicle eAxle systems is another key step for Bosch to enhance its presence in the new energy vehicles field.”

Wang Weiliang, president of Bosch Mobility board China, said in a statement “Facing the wave of electrification in commercial vehicles, Bosch has a clear strategy for the future. We will remain committed to technological leadership and the principle of quality first. Our full stack technology will help drive the development of electrification products featuring high simplicity, lightweight and reliability. Combined with other technology like thermal management, we will support to build light duty super truck.”
