China’s BYD is considering entering the Canadian auto market, according to a regulatory filing it submitted earlier this month, accoding to a Reuters report.
The potential move comes even as Canadian officials are weighing up imposing tariffs on vehicles imported from China, in line with the US and the European Union.
In June, Canada said it was considering tariffs, which analysts say is to align itself with its allies.
Documents filed with the federal and Ontario governments on behalf of BYD, asking to “advise on matters related to the expected market entry of BYD into Canada for the sale of passenger electric vehicles.”
It was not immediately clear when representatives of the company’s Canadian unit, BYD Canada met with government officials, the Reuters report said.
