China’s electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) has introduced a series of battery products, marking a significant leap, it says, into the “multi-power era”.

The company’s inaugural Super Tech Day saw the unveiling of the Freevoy dual-power battery, the Naxtra sodium-ion battery, and the second-generation Shenxing superfast charging battery, alongside an integrated 24V start/stop Naxtra battery for heavy-duty trucks.

It is claimed the Freevoy dual-power battery allows for customised user experiences beyond the constraints of single technology paths.

Featuring dual-power architecture and advanced self-forming anode technology, the Freevoy battery is designed to offer more stable and reliable power supply, especially for vehicles with advanced autonomous driving capabilities.

Furthermore, the Freevoy battery’s “dual-electric range extension” technology intelligently allocates power from two energy zones based on driving status and habits.

CATL released three dual-power solutions catering to various chemical systems, including Sodium-LFP Dual-Power Battery, LFP-LFP Dual-Power Battery, and NCM-LFP/NCM-NCM Dual-Power Battery, each designed to meet specific user needs and driving scenarios.

In a press statement, CATL said: “The innovative architecture from dual power to multi power will not be limited to the field of electric passenger vehicles, but will also be implemented in all fields such as electric buses, heavy-duty trucks, airplanes, ships, as well as industrial and commercial applications, accelerating the industrialisation of renewable energy across all scenarios.

“At the same time, it will also accelerate the application process of cutting-edge technologies such as solid-state batteries.”

The firm’s Naxtra, which is claimed to be the world’s first mass-producible sodium-ion battery, addresses resource limitations and bolsters the new energy industry’s foundation.

The Naxtra passenger EV Battery has achieved a performance breakthrough from “passive defence” to “intrinsic safety”.

With an energy density of 175Wh/kg, the Naxtra battery supports a driving range of 500km and offers over 10,000 charge cycles, greatly lowering maintenance costs.

CATL’s second-generation Shenxing superfast charging battery has 12C peak charging rate and 1.3MW peak charging power.

It is capable of charging from 5% to 80% SOC in just 15 minutes at -10°C, doubling the current industry’s fastest charging capability.

The Naxtra 24V Heavy-Duty Truck Integrated Start-Stop Battery boasts an eight-year service life and deep discharge capabilities, leading commercial vehicles into a lead-free era.

Earlier this month, CATL has agreed to partner with China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) to establish a nationwide battery swapping network across the country.
