Collaboration technologies like customer relationship management (CRM) systems and enterprise communications platform can be pivotal in addressing geopolitical events impacting the automotive industry, a new report outlines.
GlobalData’s The Future of Work in Automotive report details the that the sector is being shaped by a variety of geopolitical tensions. In particular, it notes the divergence of regulations across different countries and the campaign of tariffs being introduced by the new Trump administration in the US.
Of the differing regional regulations and restrictions autos companies must navigate, the report states: “These variations affect the software used in vehicles and the broader landscape of automotive manufacturing and employment. As each nation establishes its own rules and standards, automotive companies face challenges in harmonising their operations across multiple markets, impacting their workforce strategies and employment practices.”
In relation to tariffs, it adds: “Companies depend on a complex network of suppliers and manufacturers worldwide, and any disruptions in trade relations can significantly affect production costs and profitability. This, in turn, influences job security, the demand for specific skill sets and the need for workforce adaptability.”
Collaboration technologies
Managing these challenges requires strong communication and coordination across global teams. The report asserts that “real-time information sharing and decision-making is crucial for responding rapidly to geopolitical events.
“Integrating CRM systems with supply chain management tools provides visibility into supplier networks and inventory levels and allows companies to identify alternative suppliers or routes quickly,” the report says. “Additionally, these technologies foster innovation by enabling cross-functional teams to collaborate on product development, which is crucial for aligning with geopolitical trends like the demand for electric vehicles.

By GlobalData“Lastly, CRM and collaboration tools support risk management and strategic planning by providing insights into geopolitical risks, helping companies model scenarios, and developing strategic plans.”
In addition to collaboration technologies, the report also notes that investing in connectivity “is a must” for automotive companies. Not only is 5G being embedded in vehicles – and critical for the development of autonomous vehicles – but also it underpins the collaboration technologies required for responding to geopolitical issues and the automation technologies increasingly used in manufacturing plants.
“The ultra-low latency allows for split-second decision-making based on real-time information,” the report explains. “Internet is key to developing automated manufacturing plants and smart factories. It enables machines, sensors and other devices to be connected to the same network, communicate and share data.”
