US-based Johnson Controls has acquired 90% of Colombian battery supplier MAC two years after the two companies launched a joint venture to produce and sell lead-acid batteries in the Central and South American regions.

The companies said in a statement the JV had allowed them to bring new technology and innovation to the South American battery market and increase exports from Colombia, mostly to the Andean region.

JC is market leader in South America with brands such as Heliar, VARTA, LTH and OPTIMA. MAC says that it is Colombia’s most recognised automotive battery brand adding that it has a strong presence in the Caribbean.

Apart from battery manufacturing, the companies have recycling operations in Yumbo, Colombia which they say will continue to serve as a key resource in providing a stable supply chain for operations in the region.
