ZF LIFETEC has introduced its electromechanical seatbelt locking system, named e.Locking, to improve vehicle safety and design flexibility.

Designed for use in the ACR8.S seatbelt retractor series, this system electrifies the traditional sensor and release mechanisms of seatbelt retractors.

The e.Locking system simplifies the integration of seatbelts into vehicle seats, positioning the retractor directly in the seat rather than the traditional B-pillar.

This shift, according to the company, enables greater design flexibility, especially for modern and reclining seating concepts, which are becoming more prevalent in autonomous vehicles.

The system’s electromagnetic coil replaces the mechanical steel ball previously used in seatbelt locking, triggering the locking mechanism based on signals from a central ECU that monitors vehicle acceleration, deceleration, and tilt.

This electromechanical approach enhances safety by ensuring that the seatbelt locks promptly in the event of sudden deceleration or braking.

The e.Locking system guarantees controlled restraint, helping to mitigate the effects of hard braking and crashes.

The system also adapts to dynamic driving conditions, such as cornering, locking the seatbelt as needed to offer additional support, the company claims.

In addition to its safety features, the e.Locking system also improves occupant comfort by reducing unnecessary seatbelt locking, such as during bumpy roads.

As automotive engineering trends shift towards autonomous driving and advanced seating designs, ZF Lifetec’s e.Locking system offers a reliable solution for integrating seatbelts into the next generation of vehicle interiors.

The system also seamlessly connects with other vehicle safety features, such as emergency braking assistants, enhancing occupant protection in critical driving situations.
