Marcopolo, Brazil’s largest bus maker, has signed an agreement to sell 119 vehicles to Dubai Municipality, the company responsible for public transport in Dubai.

The first bus will be shipped at the end of August and Marcopolo will eventually export 112 Viale urban buses and seven Andare intercity models. All will be built on Brazilian-made Scania chassis.


To meet the special demands of Dubai Municipality, the air conditioned buses will have ‘air curtains’ on their door openings to help keep hot ambient air and sand out.


They will also have a separate seating area for women.

Marcopolo has not announced the value of Dubai deal but the company has said it will grow exports this year. In the first half of 2001, Marcopolo won export business worth $US79.1 million, a rise of 43.5% over the $US55.1 million in H1, 2000.


To help with negotiations with countries in the near Orient, Marcopolo opened a Dubai office in 1998.
