Nissan do Brasil will next week start to sell the Xterra SUV, its second vehicle produced in Brazil. The model is made in the Renault-Nissan Alliance commercial vehicles and pick-up plant in São José dos Pinhais city, in Paraná state, writes Rogério Louro.
The Brazilian-made Nissan Xterra is essentially the same design as the model produced in the United States, but has a locally-made MWM 132bhp 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine – the US models have petrol engines.
The SUV is made only with four-wheel drive and Nissan Brazil expects to sell about 200 units of the model per month locally and will also this year start exports to Argentina.
São José dos Pinhais also produces Nissan’s Frontier pick-up, launched in June 2002 in double cab form. Last month, Nissan introduced a single cab version.
Nissan is now studying car production in Brazil and is eyeing the recently redesigned Micra compact which shares its platform with the next generation Renault Clio and would be produced in Renault’s car factory, also in São José dos Pinhais. This plant produces the current Clio, in hatch and sedan versions, and the previous generation Scénic.
