FAW-Volkswagen has made a significant move into the Chinese new energy vehicle market with the launch of its first plug in hybrid SUV, the Tayron GTE (Grand Turismo Electric).
This new SUV is fitted with the VW 1.4-litre EA211 turbocharged petrol engine combined with an 85kW electric motor to generate a maximum power output of 155kW and up to 400Nm of torque.
The Tayron can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 8.4 seconds and has a fuel consumption of less than two litres per 100km.
Dong Xiuhui, FAW-Volkswagen vice-president and president of FAW-Volkswagen Sales Company, said the key appeal of the Tayron GTE was its versatility by meeting the demands of various travel scenarios.
The plug in has a range of 54km in electric mode, which he claimed was enough for most commuters in China, while the petrol engine eliminated any travel range “anxieties”.
Prices range FROM CNY249,800 (US$35,232) TO CNY259,800, depending on equipment.
The conventional Tayron petrol SUV was launched in China in October 2018 and achieved sales of 168,000 units in 2019.
