Another version of a petrol engine jointly developed by BMW and PSA Peugeot-Citroen is making its Peugeot debut in new 207 models.

The 120bhp, 16-valve, 1.6-litre motor is the PSA version of the BMW Mini Cooper powerplant and will be available in new 207 Sport and the SE models in the UK, along with the first 207 availability of a four-speed automatic transmission option with Tiptronic manual select function.
Both BMW and PSA versions of the engine are made at the French automaker’s Douvrin plant. The new engine will replace the current 110hp 1.6 litre 16v engine in the 207 range.
Peugeot earlier launched a 150bhp turbocharged version of this engine. The non-turbo develops its maximum power of 120 bhp at 6,000 rpm and top torque of 120 lb ft at 4,250 rpm but is said to have a very flat torque curve which, at 2,000 rpm, delivers 88% of the maximum, or 103 lb ft.
As well as variable valve timing for both camshafts, there is also a variable valve lift system on the inlet valves allowing the maximum valve lift to be adjusted gradually according to the position of the accelerator pedal. This technology, pioneered by BMW, eliminates the throttle butterfly as the engine power is controlled through the infinite adjustment of the inlet valve lift and intake valve opening times.
