Citroën, one of PSA Peugeot Citroën’s two car brands, says that 2001 was a fifth consecutive year of record sales, with almost 1,250,000 vehicles sold globally.

The company’s performance in Western Europe was particularly strong, with passenger car sales growing by around 13% in 2001 to an estimated 861,000 units (source: ACEA). Citroën’s share of the European car market in 2001 expanded from 5.2% to 5.8%, with the company experiencing double-digit market growth in Germany, Holland and Belgium. In the UK, sales expanded by over 50% in 2001.

Citroën’s sales in its home market of France were up by 9% to take almost 14% of the market.

The company’s sales growth was boosted by the impact of the Xsara-based Picasso compact MPV, which competes in the same segment as Renault’s Scenic and Opel/Vauxhall’s Zafira.

Industry sales estimates indicate that the arrival of the Picasso has incrementally grown Citroën sales volume by around 200,000 units, with little cannibalisation of the C-segment Xsara model with which it shares platform and much componentry.
