PSA Peugeot Citroën has launched in France a real-time traffic information system for Peugeot and Citroën cars in partnership with ViaMichelin.

The new service is used with the RT3/Navidrive telematics unit – optional or standard in most PSA Group models in Europe – that combines CD/radio audio, GPS navigation, hands-free GSM telephone with voice recognition, and, since 2003, an emergency call system – similar to GM’s OnStar product in the US. PSA’s ‘SOS’ system now works in most European countries.

ViaMichelin collects traffic data from various sources, processes it and transmits it in real time to the Navidrive system by FM radio, in compliance with European RDS-TMC standards.

If requested by the driver, the navigation system can at any moment process this information to suggest alternative routes that reduce driving time.

Since September, the new service has gradually been included in the RT3/Navidrive option, which is available on all Peugeot and Citroën models except the Peugeot 107 and Citroën C1, C2, and Xsara Picasso.
