Chinese state-owned automaker Beijing Automotive (BAIC) has submitted an indicative, non-binding offer for Opel, sources familiar with the situation were quoted as saying on Friday.

It planned to make a binding offer by the middle of July, one of the sources told the Reuters news agency. GM Europe declined to comment.

Some reports suggest the Chinese firm, with no international autos experience, is focused on obtaining technology.

Canada’s Magna is frontrunner to buy Opel though some doubts have been expressed that the deal will be concluded. RHJ International is also in the running.
