BMW plans to open a new research centre in South Korea this year to help it develop and tailor telematics and in-car infotainment systems for the local market.

The centre will carry out local research into local market preferences and relay these back to BMW’s headquarters in Munich, Germany.

South Korea is BMW’s ninth-largest market worldwide, with over 33,000 unit sales in 2013.

BMW said it already has local research operations in South Korea and that the new centre would help expand these activities. The company has similar research centres in California, researching the local US market, and others centres in Japan and China.
