The first pictures of the Smart forfour – the city car maker’s first four-seat model, show some family links to the tiny city-coupe models with exposed metal safety cell and removeable plastic panels.

The new car is 3,670mm long, 150mm more than a standard-wheelbase Mercedes A-class and will come with three petrol (1.1-1.4-litre) and two diesels, including a 1.5-litre turbodiesel.

On sale after its public debut at September’s Frankfurt motor show, the new car was jointly developed with Mitsubishi’s upcoming new Colt, shares its platform and will be built in the same DaimlerChrysler Nedcar factory in Holland, where the Mitsubishi Carisma and Volvo S/V40 are currently made.

Options will include a two-piece sunroof and three-door, commercial variants and a ‘crossover’ SUV are all expected to follow the five-door shown off first.
