General Motors’ German unit Opel on Monday said it would halt production at its biggest plant during US president George W Bush’s visit to Germany this week, which is expected to cause major transport disruptions, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

AP said major highways will be closed and rail services interrupted during Bush’s visit on Wednesday to the cities of Mainz and Wiesbaden, west of Frankfurt. As a result, Adam Opel AG told some 5,000 workers scheduled to work two shifts at its Ruesselsheim plant outside Frankfurt to stay home, spokeswoman Gudrun Langer told the news agency.
“In view of the expected transport disruption, neither workers’ punctual appearance at work nor the timely delivery of materials are assured,” Langer reportedly said. The lost production will be made up over the next two Saturdays, AP noted.
Bush’s day-long trip to Germany includes engagements in Mainz and Wiesbaden and is part of a European tour he began on Sunday in Brussels, Belgium, the Associated Press added.
