The Volkswagen group aims to set another record by selling 8m cars in 2011, its chief executive said.

In the first six months of this year it delivered 4m cars, Martin Winterkorn said in Berlin, according to Reuters.

“I expect that we will add quite a bit to that,” he said.

In 2010, the group sold 7.3m cars.

Winterkorn said the company had increased sales not just in China but also in western and eastern Europe as well as in North and South America.

It is aiming to dethrone Toyota as global market leader within a few years.
