Volkswagen will offer discount packages of up to €975 euros ($US1,201) per unit on its flagship Golf V model to help promote sales in Germany, the carmaker reportedly said.

The deals replace an offer of free air conditioning worth €1,225 euros that expires at the end of this month, officials told Reuters.

They reiterated that VW expects to sell 600,000 Golfs this year, adding September would be one of the best sales months since the new Golf was launched nearly a year ago.

“We are well on the way to reach this goal” of 600,000 sales, VW’s marketing chief for Germany told the news agency.

In the first eight months of 2004, Volkswagen said it delivered 310,000 new Golfs to customers, of which 106,000 were sold in Germany, Reuters noted.
