Ford plans to introduce 20 new engines and transmissions to China by 2015 as it moves to upgrade its entire powertrain portfolio in the country.
These will include the new one-litre EcoBoost engine (which went into production in Germany earlier this month) and will support Ford’s plan to introduce 15 new vehicles in China during the period and improve the fuel economy of its range by over 20%.
Ford said EcoBoost is the “centerpiece” of the company’s fuel economy efforts.
By 2013 it plans to produce 1.5m EcoBoost engines a year globally, with nearly 80% of its vehicles using the technology.
Ford builds vehicles, including the Focus and Mondeo, in China in a three-way joint venture with Chongqing Changan Automobile and Mazda. It also holds 30% of light commercial vehicle producer Jiangling Motors which makes Transit vans.
