UK-based Honda Motor Europe has announced the details of its new HR-V, with the small SUV to be offered in the region from late 2021 in hybrid-only form.
Sharing its Global Small platform with the Jazz, the HR-V e-HEV is the same length (and width) as the previous model yet boasts a claimed 35 mm more leg room. As for boot space, the new model can accommodate two 26-inch mountain bikes, while Honda’s versatile ‘magic’ folding seats also feature.
The coupe-like SUV’s i-MMD2 hybrid system consists of a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine and two motors. These produce a combined 96 kW (131 PS) and 253 Nm. Honda is yet to reveal other details of the drivetrain but the transmission should be an e-CVT. AWD will be available in Japan but not in Europe.
The addition of the new model is another component in HME’s strategy to fully electrify its line-up by the end of 2022. Going into 2023, the only Hondas available in LHD and RHD European countries will be hybrids or EVs.
Europe might be a small part of Honda global presence but the new 2ZY series HR-V will become a major vehicle for the company thanks in particular to China where the brand is incredibly strong. There will be direct replacements for the Vezel (that name is also used in Japan), manufactured by the Guangqi Honda joint venture, and the X-RV, which is made by Dongfeng Honda. Thanks to the combined success of the soon to be replaced 2XP shape models, the PRC is easily the small SUV’s number one market.
