Honda has revealed some details of the new-generation Freed compact minivan it plans to launch this autumn.
The current model has been on the market since May 2008, so the replacement cycle will be over eight years.
The existing model comes with either a 1.5L i-VTEC engine or a mild hybrid system using the company's IMA (integrated motor assist) system, giving it a fuel consumption of 21.6km/litre.
The new model gets a new hybrid system, which uses the company's one-motor i-DCD full hybrid system currently available in the Vezel and Fit/Jazz models which will give it a much better fuel efficiency – expected to be in the region of 28km/litre.
The current Freed, based on the Fit/Jazz platform, is mainly sold in Japan and across South-east Asia. The new model is expected to be offered much more broadly, with speculation that it will be launched in China in September and in new markets further afield later on.
