Fiat has set a target of 80-100 independent dealers spread across 35 Indian cities in the next 12-18 months as it looks to double its market share in the next two to three years, having ended a showroom-sharing deal with Tata Motors.

Senior vice president of Fiat India, Enrico Anatasio, told the Economic Times of India: “We are moving to an important milestone with our own exclusive dealers. The volumes will improve gradually and with the complete dedicated approach, the result can be much better.”

Fiat India sold only 18,000 units in 2011-12 in a market of over 2m vehicles giving it a share of 0.7%.

Anatasio added: “With a focused dealer network and launch of new variants and brands going ahead, we are aiming to double the market share to 1.5%.”

The company said first quarter volumes of the Punto are much higher compared with a year ago following the launch of variants such as the Sport. In order to boost its brand image, Fiat also inaugurated its second exclusive Fiat Caffe, a lifestyle showroom in Pune’s up market Koregaon Park, which will be run by Millenium Motors.

Fiat is also working with its alliance partner Chrysler on a new product line strategy which may include Jeep entering India over the next few years.
