New vehicle sales in Indonesia fell by 38.5% year-on-year in April to 31,101 units, according to retail data released by PT Toyota Astra Motor.

Month-on-month, volumes in April declined by almost 10% to their lowest level so far this year.

The country’s GDP growth fell to 4.4% in the first quarter of 2009, from 5.2% in the fourth quarter of 2008 and from over 6% for the whole of 2008, reflecting a sharp decline in exports and investment.

Commercial vehicle sales declined by over 50% to 7,843 units, as most industries in the country reduced output in line with declining demand. Sales of passenger vehicles declined by almost 33% to 23,238 units, despite sharp reduction in interest rates – reflecting a drop in consumer confidence.

Cumulatively, retail volumes declined by 25.8% in the first four months of 2009 to 137,738 units,  compared with 185,684 units a year earlier. Commercial vehicle sales fell by almost 33.6% to 37,123 units, while passenger vehicle sales dropped by 22.4% to 100,615 units.
