An agreement has been signed between Iveco and De Tomaso Modena Spa for the supply of latest-generation Iveco Common Rail engines for installation in UAZ “Simbir” vehicles assembled by De Tomaso Modena in its Cutro factory. The project, in its initial development stage, envisages the production of 20,000 engines.
The Simbir is a vehicle of Russian origin (UAZ) and is described by De Tomaso Modena as ‘the evolution of a model that has played a major role in the development of heavy-duty applications’.
The company says it has obtained European type-approval, so shipment to selected markets across Europe is planned. The target markets for which potential dealers have already been identified are: Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Greece.
Production of the Simbir is expected to start at the end of 2002, initially in the Modena factory and subsequently in the Cutro factory. The business plan envisages 5,000 units/year by 2005, reaching 10,000 in 2006.
The UAZ Simbir is described as a rugged 4×4 ‘aimed at off-road enthusiasts, as well as professional users as a heavy-duty vehicle’.
