DaimlerChrysler has opened a research and development centre in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, which will serve as a base for pioneering technologies for Mercedes-Benz models to be sold in Japan, Kyodo News reported.
The centre, which was set up inside the Hakusan High-Tech Park, will work on projects including the development of a drive unit using renewable fuel, such as a fuel battery.
It will also analyse the Japanese market as well as strengthening cooperation with Japanese automakers and related firms, and may jointly develop products with them, the German automaker told the news agency.
