Mitsubishi Motors (MMC) is in talks with DaimlerChrysler AG to try to settle compensation for the German automaker for damages related to recall scandals at the Japanese automaker’s truck unit, the company said Friday, according to news agency AP.

The talks on possible compensation are continuing although Mitsubishi Motors has not received an official demand for compensation from DaimlerChrysler, Mitsubishi Motors said in a statement.

DaimlerChrysler had been a partner for the Tokyo-based automaker until DaimlerChrysler decided last year against making cash available in a rescue plan for MMC.

DaimlerChrysler was said to be angry that after it took a stake in both Mitsubishi Motors and its truck unit, scandals about a systematic cover-up of auto defects have emerged.

Mitsubishi Motors said the compensation was still undecided, AP said. It also denied a report Friday in major business daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun that the settlement may be between 50 billion yen ($484 million) and 80 billion yen ($774.5 billion).
