Toyota
has introduced a second-generation Corolla Spacio, aiming its new seven-seat minivan
at Honda’s recently-launched Stream.
Some media reports from Japan also say that Toyota will send the new Spacio
to Europe – where it would compete with the likes of Renault’s segment-establishing
Scenic, the Spanish-built Nissan Tino and GM’s Opel/Vauxhall Zafira –
though others say Euro exports are still being considered.

However, considering that the smaller Yaris (Vitz) Verso five-seater is already
on sale in Europe, and that the new Avensis Verson (Ipsum) seven-seater is on
the way, the gap-plugging Corolla Spacio, with a wheelbase only 35mm longer
than its predecessor, would seem a certainty.
The old model was exported but only to Asia-Pacific markets.
Two engines are available in Japan: 1.5 and 1.8 litre units with Toyota’s
VVT-i variable valve timing system. A four-speed electronically controlled automatic
gearbox is standard but a five-speed manual alternative can be expected for
Europe.

and brake assist are also standard in Japan and the safety equipment includes
redesigned front seats claimed to reduce neck injuries in collisions.
Toyota plans to sell 3,500 Spacios a month in Japan. It also plans to sell
2,500 of the larger Avensis Verso in Europe each month from launch later this
year.
