Jidu Auto, a joint venture established in 2021 between Chinese automaker Geely Holding Group and local tech company Baidu Inc, launched its first battery electric vehicle (BEV) powered by artificial intelligence (AI) in China last week.
The Ji Yue 01 is the first model to be sold under the Ji Yue premium intelligent technology brand launched in August of this year. The SUV features Baidu’s Apollo Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving technology, the SIMO voice-activated control system and advanced intelligent cockpit based on Baidu’s Ernie Bot – similar to ChatGPT, using Qualcomm’s 8295 intelligent vehicle cockpit chip.
The Apollo Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving system uses Nvidia Drive Orin autonomous drive chips and consists of 11 high-definition cameras, 12 ultrasonic radars and 5-millimeter wave radars. L4 systems allow vehicles to be driven in most conditions without human input.
The Ji Yue 01 comes with two battery options, a 71.4KWh pack providing a 550 km range and a 100kWh pack offering a 720km range. Prices range between CNY249,000 (US$34,100) to CNY339,900 (US$46,400).
Jidu Auto’s CEO Luo Gang told reporters at the launch event in Shanghai: “We believe we are at the initial stages of creating a genuine ‘robocar’ of the future. We have high confidence in our product but we still lack brand awareness to increase our market share significantly.”
Following the creation of the Ji Yue brand in August Geely Holding Group increased its stake in the joint venture to 65%, with Baidu holding the remaining 35%.
