  • New platform for new generation Audi A4 based on Volkswagen Group’s MLB architecture, as also used by the larger A6. Build expected at all existing global locations. S4 and RS4 derivatives to follow, plug-in hybrid sedan expected. Announced 29 June 2015 with public debut at the Frankfurt show next September.
  • Dimensions: length: 4,726mm (+25mm); width: 1,842mm (+16mm); height: 1427mm (unchanged)
  • Average weight said to be 120kg less than previous A4 due largely to aluminium (roof) and hot formed body structure steel; average 21% more fuel efficiency. 
  • Avant gains 15 litres for 505 litres of boot space; 10 and 15 more than BMW 3 Series Touring and Mercedes C-Class Estate respectively. Rises to 1,510 litres when rear seats folded.
  • Four and six cylinder engines with outputs from 150PS to 272PS
  • New 2.0 TFSI with claimed “revolutionary combustion system” and 2.0 TDI ultra with sub-100g/km CO2 output (17-inch standard wheel)
  • A4 Avant g-tron will follow in 2016 in some markets with two litre turbocharged engine powered by natural gas though can run on petrol.
  • Cars with I4 engines have standard six-speed manual gearbox, seven speed, dual clutch (S tronic) and eight-speed tiptronic transmissions optional. CVT (Multitronic) discontinued.
  • Customer deliveries start in Europe in November.

Claimed lowest in class 0.23 drag coefficient (saloon) for exemplary refinement.

Standard equipment highlights: 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights with LED DRLs, smartphone interface, drive select, three-zone climate control and seven inch colour monitor.

Technology options include virtual cockpit, predictive efficiency assistant, traffic jam assist, rear cross traffic assist, collision avoidance assist and turn assist.

Optional headlights with LED and Matrix LED technology (including dynamic indicators).

Optional discreet contour lighting illuminates doors and centre console.

Range launches with seven engines – three TFSI and four TDI. Power up, fuel consumption down by up to 21%. CO2 below 100g/km in 2.0 TDI ultra saloon.

Transmissions all redesigned, seven-speed S tronic now also available with front wheel drive; automatics now offer fuel saving freewheel.

Dynamic steering, which varies ratio according to speed and steering angle, and suspension with adjustable shock absorbers offers sports or comfort settings. Drive select driving dynamics system will be standard here in UK.

Driver assistance systems include predictive efficiency, active lane, Stop&Go adaptive cruise control including traffic-jam assist. Latter’s control strategy takes into account parameters such as road markings and traffic ahead. Parking  and rear cross-traffic assist, exit warning, collision avoidance, turn assist and pre-sense systems plus traffic sign recognition all available.
