Malaysia’s second national car company, Perodua, reported a 30% jump in sales to a record 57,153 units in the first quarter of 2015, to claim an unprecedented market share of 34%.
The overall Malaysian vehicle market expanded by just 2.1% to 159,913 units in the same period, compared with 168,306 units a year earlier.
Perodua’s sales in March alone reached 22,500 units, driven by strong demand for the Axia small car for which it has received over 100,000 orders since launch in August 2014. Cumulative sales of this model since its launch now exceed 60,000 units.
Perodua’s first-quarter sales were more than twice those of the once market leader Proton, which sold 27,682 units during the quarter for a market share of 16.4%.
Honda reported a 42% jump in sales to 22,145 units in the three-month period to claim a 13.2% market share, helped by strong demand for the new HR-V SUV.
Honda overtook Toyota as the best-selling foreign brand which reported sales of 16,241 units for a 9.6% market share.
