Proton has said that it isn’t in talks with any party following a local media report that it was in merger discussions with local carmaker Perodua.

The report in The Edge said that ‘speculation is rife’ concerning a possible merger between Proton and Perodua.

“The board of directors of Proton wish to clarify that there has been no discussion with any party in relation to any merger,” the company said in a filing with the stock exchange.

Malaysian prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak recently said that Proton needs to continue to search for a strategic partner.

Speaking at the launch of the Proton Exora, Najib said that an alliance was needed to produce fuel-efficient products and stressed that Proton could not afford to remain its comfort zone.
